PRINCIPLE A thin rigid square template with a hole close to each corner and a keyhole shaped slot to accommodate the toe post is placed around the toe post on the insole of the test sandal. Four holes which match the holes in the template are drilled in the sole. Two loops of thick wire are threaded through both the template and sole. The assembly is then fitted between the jaws of a tensile testing machine and the force required to pull the post from the sole is measured. 3. REFERENCES machine. Hold 4. APPARATUS AND MATERIALS 4.1 A tensile testing machine with: 4.1.1 A jaw separation rate of 100 ± 10 mm/min. 4.1.2 The capability of measuring forces up to 1 kN to an accuracy of 2% as specified by class 2 in BS EN 10002-2. 4.1.3 A lower jaw capable of clamping all four free ends of the wire loops (4.3) at the same time. 4.1.4 An upper jaw capable of clamping the side straps attached to the top of the toe post of the test sandal. 4.1.5 The facility to record either the maximum force obtained during the test, or the force throughout the test. A suitable machine is available from SATRA reference STM 466. 4.2 A rigid template produced from thin metal or fibreboard with the dimensions shown in Figure 1, a suitable template can be supplied by SATRA. 4.3 Two loops of wire, diameter 3.0 ± 0.2 mm, of the dimensions shown in Figure 1, Holdings In suitable loops can be supplied by SATRA. 4.4 A twist drill bit of diameter 4.0 ± 0.5 mm 4.5 A hand or electric drill. PREPARATION OF THE TEST SPECIMENS 5.1 Either one or a pair of completed footwear. 6. PROCEDURE 6.1 Where possible store the sandal(s) to be tested in a standard controlled environment of either 23 ± 2°C/50 ± 2% rh or 20 ± 2°C/65 ± 2% rh for at least 48 hours before testing and carry out the test in this environment. Include details of the conditions used in the test report. 6.2 Cut away any side straps from the sole while leaving a sufficient length attached to the top of the toe post to be firmly secured in the upper jaw (4.1.4) of the tensile testing machine. SATRA TM118: 1992 / Page 3 ngsin 6.3 Place the template on the insole of the sandal so that the toe post is in the centre of the key hole slot. The template should be positioned so that it does not cover any area uperDi where the toe post is lying between the insole and sole, see section 8.1. 6.4 Without moving the template mark the insole at the centres of the four holes in the template. Then remove the template from the sandal. 6.5 Use the drill (4.5) and drill bit (4.4) to drill four holes through the insole and sole of the sandal in the positions marked in section 6.4. 6.6 Replace the template on the insole of the sandal in the position marked in section 6.4 so that all four holes in the template are aligned with the four holes in the insole. 6.7 Thread the two wire loops (4.3) through the holes in the template, insole and sole from the template side of the assembly, see Figure 1. 6.8 Clamp the four free ends of the two wire loops (4.3) in the lower jaw (4.1.3) of the tensile testing machine, and the free ends of the side straps attached to the toe post in the upper jaw (4.1.4). 6.9 Turn on the recording system (4.1.5) of the tensile testing machine. 6.10 Operate the tensile testing machine so that the jaws separate at a rate of 100
